Éva Bóka is an independent researcher and lecturer in history. She graduated at the Eötvös Loránd University in 1978 (Historical Sciences and Russian Language, Literature, and Slavistic). She has received her PhD degree in history from the Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest in 1997. She attained the degree of Doctor Habilitata (Dr. Habil) by the University of Pécs (Hungary) in 2007. She was then awarded the title of honorary associate professor by the Senate of the Corvinus University of Budapest in 2011.
Between 1979-1986 she worked as editorial secretary of a quarterly survey of the Institute of Historical Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (called Világtörténet, i.e., Universal History) where she made also researches about the early-modern European diplomacy.
Between 1986-1996 she was reviewer of the official journal of the Südost-Institut (called Südost-Forschungen) in Germany (Munich) where she published several papers about the history of the relations between the Ottoman Empire and Europe in the 17th century.
Between 1990-1994 she worked as a researcher at the East European Institute (Oost-Europa Instituut) of the Amsterdam University where she conducted research on Central-European and Hungarian (Eötvös, Jászi, Bibó) political thinkers.
Between 1996-2001 she was part of a EU PHARE Project within the framework of the Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest aiming to introduce European Studies at the Hungarian Universities by elaborating study materials. In this framework she has written a textbook on the history of the idea of European unity and taught the history of the idea of European unity in the MA program of the Political Sciences of the Eötvös Lóránd University.
Between 2001-2007 she participated in the research and publishing program of the Ungarisches Institut (Munich).
Between 2002-2005 she worked together with the international scientific group of the Európai Szemle (European Review, published in Budapest) where she published articles about the history of the European idea and integration.
Between 2005-2010 she lectured the Theory and Practice of European Integration course at the MA program of the Institute of the International Relations of the Corvinus University of Budapest for Hungarian and Erasmus students in English, and published about the history of the European integration.
Between 2010-2017 she lectured at the International Doctoral School of the Corvinus University of Budapest the political history of the idea of European unity, the theory and practice of European integration, and the rethinking Europe thematic. In the framework of the Doctoral School she organized and was the research coordinator of the Rethinking Europe Research Group of PhD students (2010-2017). She helped and encouraged PhD students to publish, and actively participated in the creation and the publishing activity of the Grotius, the E-journal of the Doctoral School.
In 2002, 2006, 2012 she gave lectures in the Historical PhD Program of the Multidisciplinary Doctoral School of the University of Pécs on the history of the idea of European unity and European integration.
In 2010 she participated in the teaching activities of the Institute for Social and European Studies Foundation (Kőszeg) where she lectured the course Europe in Search of Unity in Diversity (2010), and published in ISES Füzetek 14. a paper under the title Europe in Search of Unity in Diversity. Can Personalist Federalism and Multilevelism Manage Diversity? (2010). In the framework of ISES she gave a course on the same topic at the Faenza Summer University organized by the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Commission (2010).
Between 2014-2018 she was invited lecturer at the Institute of Political Sciences of the Faculty of Law of the Eötvös Lóránd University where she taught the Modernization of the States and the International Relations (The Western World and East Asia) course for Hungarian and Erasmus MA students in English. There she initiated the Erasmus Papers publishing the best papers of MA Erasmus students, in English.
Between 2010-2016 she published the results of her researches about the relationship between Europe and Asia (China, Japan, South-Korea, Singapore and India) concentrating on the topic of modernization (democratization) of the states and the international relations in the 19th and 20th centuries.
She lectured at conferences, and published many papers in various journals in Hungary, Germany, and the United States. She is the author of six books. Her research interests are the early-modern European diplomacy; the theory and practice of the international relations; the history of the European idea; the theory and practice of European integration; Europe and the international system; Europe and other civilizations especially China, Japan and South-Korea; modernization of the states and the international relations in the 19th and 20th century.
Currently she works as an independent researcher in history, publishes papers and books in Hungarian and in English.
